Southport Maths Tuition is built on the idea:
maths becomes easier when it’s explained clearly.
I’m Christopher — an experienced tutor and teacher, offering in-person tuition sessions to a wide range of pupils across the Southport area.
My approach is simple:
A calm, supportive environment where questions are always welcome
Clear explanations that cut through the noise
Structured, step‑by‑step methods that pupils can rely on
Carefully designed resources that build skills without overwhelming
⭐ Qualifications & Experience
I’ve always been passionate about mathematics, and that’s reflected in the path I’ve taken. I completed A‑levels in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, achieving grade A in each, before going on to study for a B.Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2006.
Wanting to bring that subject knowledge into the classroom, I trained as a maths teacher at Manchester Metropolitan University, qualifying in 2012 and gaining full QTS. Since then, I’ve worked across a range of roles that have given me a deep understanding of how students learn:
- Full‑time secondary maths teacher, delivering the full GCSE curriculum
- Private maths tutor, supporting learners from KS3 to A-Level with tailored one‑to‑one teaching
- In‑school intervention tutor, helping pupils close gaps, rebuild confidence, and secure key skills
This mix of classroom teaching, targeted intervention, and individual tutoring has shaped the way I teach today: clear explanations, structured methods, and a focus on building confidence through small, meaningful steps.
⭐ Who I Help
I work with a wide range of learners, but I specialise in supporting students who need clear explanations, structured methods, and a confidence boost in maths. The students I help most often include:
- KS3 learners — building strong foundations in algebra, number, and problem‑solving so they enter GCSE with confidence rather than anxiety.
- GCSE students aiming for Grade 4–5 — learners who need steady, methodical teaching that fills gaps, simplifies tricky topics, and builds belief that they can pass.
- GCSE students aiming for Grade 7–9 — students who want to push into higher‑level reasoning, exam technique, and the more challenging parts of the Higher tier.
- Students who struggle with confidence — those who feel “bad at maths”, have fallen behind, or need patient, step‑by‑step support to rebuild their understanding.
- Students who benefit from structured methods — learners who thrive when explanations are clear, consistent, and broken into manageable steps.
- Students preparing for exams — whether they need help with timing, technique, or understanding what examiners are really looking for.
- Learners who prefer one‑to‑one support — students who make faster progress when teaching is personalised and distractions are removed.
No matter the starting point, my goal is always the same: to help students understand maths more clearly, feel more confident, and make steady, meaningful progress.
⭐ Exam Technique
Strong maths skills are only half the story at GCSE — the other half is knowing how to show that understanding in the way examiners reward. I teach students the exam techniques that make a real difference to their marks, especially when they’re aiming for Grade 5 and above.
My approach focuses on:
- Reading the question properly — spotting key words, identifying what’s actually being asked, and avoiding the classic traps examiners set.
- Showing clear working — using structured, step‑by‑step methods that pick up method marks even when the final answer isn’t perfect.
- Using efficient strategies — choosing the quickest, cleanest method for the marks available, rather than overcomplicating a question.
- Managing timing — learning how long to spend on each question, when to move on, and how to avoid losing marks through rushing.
- Recognising common question types — understanding the patterns exam boards use so students feel prepared rather than surprised.
- Checking answers effectively — using quick, reliable checks that catch avoidable mistakes without wasting time.
- Thinking like an examiner — understanding where marks come from, what earns method marks, and what loses them.
The goal is simple: students walk into the exam knowing exactly how to approach each question, how to structure their working, and how to maximise their marks with confidence.
Student Success Stories

Christopher tutored my daughter through her last year of GCSEs. He is fantastic, so knowledgable, offering her lots of tips and tricks and often alternative, more economical ways of doing things. My daughter grew in confidence, would highly recommend.

I would most definitely recommend Christopher as he has been a great help in increasing my son’s confidence and knowledge in Maths. I feel it has been invaluable having him helping as it has benefited him having one to one tuition to further his understanding.

Chris was a friendly 1-on-1 tutor that made the the idea of not only getting through A-level maths a reality but actually doing well in the subject! I’d recommend him to anyone that was considering a bit of extra guidance outside school/college.
